This new version of THE FAIR MAID OF THE WEST directed
by ANDREW GOLDBERG brings a fresh and modern slant to Elizabethan life.
An inventive adaptation by JOHN WATERS condenses two full-length plays
into one with witty verse narrative, creating a high-energy production
for the 21st century.
With PREEYA KALIDAS as Bess. Preeya was the original lead in Bombay Dreams
and also starred in Bend It Like Beckham.
It charts the adventures of Bess Bridges whose virtue and spirit win her
love and respect from those she encounters as she travels from Cornwall
to the Caribbean and from barmaid to buccaneer. All in pursuit of rescuing
her true love.
Fair Maid is an adventurous romp celebrating the love of independent barmaid
Bess for Spencer, privateer and gentleman. Fate, shipwrecks and a Moorish
King all conspire to blow true love completely off course as, unconventionally,
we follow a woman•s journey as she fights off the bad guys to rescue the
man. Through the numerous cliffhangers, Bess never loses sight of her
goal and is the vital centre of the breezy, spirited action.
The production is directed by ANDREW GOLDBERG whose last show, The Bomb-itty
of Errors, was a huge success off Broadway and at the Edinburgh festival
2002 before transferring to the New Ambassadors Theatre in London.

Thomas Heywood was a renaissance writer and actor, passionate
about theatre. He claimed to have "had a hand or at least a main
finger" in over 220 plays. They include Edward the Fourth, A Maidenhead
Well Lost and probably his best remembered A Woman Killed with Kindness.
Dubbed by Charles Lamb a "prose Shakespeare" his work similarly
covers every genre of theatre from chronicle history to light-hearted
fantasy and from romantic adventure to domestic tragedy.
